Grievance News
Many of you have asked: Is there an amount of time that a
supervisor has to assess points for a regular sick call? Such as 30 days
or 90 days or can they assess 6 months later if they happen to run
across it then.
There is not a hard and fast rule, however discipline is supposed to be
timely. Our AFA legal department has said that due to the nature of the
airline industry that three to four months would be timely. The only
exception would be if the supervisor attempted to call you in for the
discipline and you ignored their request.
As a reminder, the timeline for filing grievance questionnaires is:
Please review the Rules of Conduct that are outlined on pages 45
and 46 of the Crew Member Handbook. These rules apply to all
crewmembers, not just flight attendants. It is unacceptable for
CSA's, pilots, schedulers, or supervisors to be disrespectful,
abusive, or exhibit unprofessional behavior (Rule 1). Please
report any problems to the Professional Standards branch of the
EAP Committee and/or the Grievance Committee.
Per section 19.C.11 of the Collective Bargaining
Agreement (CBA): No written material relating to disciplinary
proceedings may be placed in any Flight Attendant’s file until
it has been initialed by the Flight Attendant concerned. In
initialing this material, the Flight Attendant is merely
acknowledging receipt and is in no way admitting fault.
Per section 2.N.2 of the CBA: If a Flight Attendant is required
(drafted) to fly an additional
segment(s) after completion of
her/his originally scheduled trip, the Flight Attendant will
receive override compensation of fifty percent (50%) above the
applicable hourly rate for the additional segment(s) flown.
Please be sure not to confuse a draft with a reassignment, in
the event of a cancellation.
Per section 7.B.8. of the CBA: The company retains the right to
request that a Flight Attendant who is absent due to illness or
injury furnish the company with a physician’s certificate
describing the medical condition that resulted in the Flight
Attendant’s absence. This request will only be made when there
is a reasonable basis to question the Flight Attendant’s
absence. The company will pay the cost of the visit, including
any diagnostic tests, or portion thereof not covered by the
Company Health Insurance plan.
